Why is this secure?

Uploading a file on a website gives that website full access to that file. It could be transferred to a server and give anyone access to it. So how can this be secure?

You need to go offline once this website is loaded and be in incognito mode.

Afterwards you can select your private files. The code in this website will then password protect your files using SHA-256 AES-CBC encryption and download them to your device.

During this time, your files can not be transferred anywhere, because you are offline. Your files stay on your device at all times.

But this website could still locally cache your private files and then transmit them at a later point to a server. Right?

No: This is why you have to use this website in incognito mode. After you have downloaded your password protected files, you have to close this browser tab. Like this, all local caches this website has of your files will be destroyed and this website can't access your private files anymore.

So is this secure?

If you trust that your browser's incognito mode works and you are offline, this tool is as secure as SHA-256 AES-CBC encryption, which is damn secure. And your password. Choose a strong password.

How can I view my encrypted files?

Just open your downloaded file in an incognito browser window. Also make sure you are offline while viewing the file.

How can I recover my lost password?

You can't. There is no way. Else this tool would not be secure.

Are there some cool features I'm missing?

Yep, first of all, you can select multiple photos & videos in the files selection. Second of all, on mobile phones you can directly use the camera to upload a picture or video. If you do this, your picture or videos will never be in your phones gallery (and potentially backed up to the cloud).

Why did you create this tool? How are you making money?

If you have a private picture or video, it's really hard to store it securely. A simple search of pictures in your device will usually reveal them. There are tons of mobile apps that allow you to password protect your private files. But we have no idea what the developer of these apps do with your files and have no way of understanding if these files are not leaked to anyone who will then extort you. But we still want to be able to password protect files. So who can we trust? We trust that browser incognito mode is safe and that files can not be transferred when you are offline. So this was a very simple way to build a file encryption tool that we can trust. How do we make money? No money. It took us an afternoon to build this, we are in for the karma points.
